FInding Time for Silence in a Noisy World
May 2011
It is true and it is NOT news. We live in a world/culture that does not embrace silence. Noise, noise everywhere and not a sound to hear. Great perseverance is required for many of us to enter into real silence. Even without outside distractions, there are endless thoughts and sounds running around our minds, like a hamster on a wheel.
A repeated hrase from a hymn or a psalm can help us enter into silence. An example:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) Repeat the words again and again. “Create in me a clean heart.....” Add some of your own words to the mantra.
I do not know the author, perhaps Joyce Rupp, who suggested the following.
Create in me a clean heart: open and receptive ......
Create in me a clean heart: cleared of the refuse of old battles with others and deadly opposition with myself.
Create in me a clean heart....freed from the clutter of cultural enticements......
Create in me a clean heart, bathed from harsh thoughts, shame.....and warmly welcoming others with the embrace of non-judgment.
Create in me a clean heart, brushed free of frantic busyness so I will have time to dwell with you in the listening space of solitude and silence.
Take time to embrace silence. Listen as God speaks your name.
