God -Talk or God - Acts
In the New Testament book of James we read: Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an someone dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense? James 4:4-17 The Message
One of the great things about North Highland UMC is that we are becoming known in our community for our actions and not simply “churchy” words. This was made very clear to us after our most recent One Thing mission in which we collected toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as provided $300 for underwear for people who are often overlooked. These are people who come from across the State for inpatient addiction care. They often arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. For example, if they were incarcerated in the summer then months later are finally assigned to Worthmore here in Aberdeen, they come on a transport wearing exactly what they were wearing when they went to prison. That means no warm clothing, and not even a change of underwear. If family or friends cannot make arrangements to mail the items, they are here with absolutely nothing. Can you even imagine?
After our gifts were delivered, we received a letter from the Clinical Manager, Julie Pfeifer, who writes: First let me say that through the years I have heard about your generous giving projects in our community and State. Not many parishes can truly match what North Highland UMC has done. You all should feel so good that you have touched many, many lives. We are very humbled by your gift, and even more so that you would even think of us. The people helped by your donation are genuinely thankful that others have stepped forward for them. You all truly need to know how AWESOME you are, which makes North Highland United Methodist a church that Aberdeen needs to hold up as one of its shining stars. Thank you!
While we do not respond in the ways of the Spirit for praise, it is so wonderful that we have had the opportunity to be known for God-acts and not only God-talk! May this gracious response to our One Thing encourage us to continue our unique outreach and over-the-top hospitality to all of God’s children. Thank you for being a congregation that is a blessing to so many!
In continued gratitude for this congregation,
Pastor Lou
