“You Can Have It”

About thirty years ago I changed my prayer focus. I changed my “tactic” for praying.  I shared this idea as often as I could to people who were feeling down and out,  worried, abandoned, lost.

I stopped asking God to take my burdens. I stopped begging God.  I stopped pleading.

I GAVE everything to God.  “I am tired of carrying this. Here God, YOU can have it.”  I sometimes cup my two hands to make a basket, imagine my concerns in the basket, then throw them into the air.  I throw them to God.  “You can have this stuff.  It isn’t doing me any good to carry it any longer.”

When we pray in community we often ask God “Hear our prayer.”  In my own mind I do not ask, I assume “God hears our every prayer.”

Today’s UPPER ROOM devotional is along the same line.  Linda Douty puts it this way.  State your prayers as affirmations. Rather than ASK God,  ASSUME ..........

· God is my Light and my Salvation (rather than “Be my light …”).
· The Lord of life walks with me (rather than “Please walk with me”).
· Healing Presence, you bring me strength (rather than “Please bring me strength”).
· I am a channel of God’s loving-kindness (rather than “Help me be a channel …”).

Likewise, when your basket is full to overflowing with love and joy and thanksgiving,  GIVE those things to God as well.
Peace, Sheila
