SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Some folk think “spiritual formation” is something new. It is as old as scripture. All Scripture is to shape and form us. One definition of Christian Spiritual Formation is “The process of being formed into the image of Christ for the sake of others.”   Pastor Mark’s sermon August 24 reminded us that we are not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed.
Spiritual Formation has also been defined as “theology walking.” Some folk say they have no THEOLOGY. Oh yes, we all do. Theology is what each of us thinks, knows and feels about God!   Theology walking is somewhat like saying “walk the talk.”   Others define it as “humanity at full stretch for God and for neighbor.” I like to think of spiritual formation as the “journey into relationships.”

This JOURNEY, this walk into relationship with God and others can be accomplished by the “practice of spiritual disciplines.” Any discipline is a PRACTICE. Some folk think “I don’t have any spiritual disciplines.” Oh yes, we all do.   One of the “disciplines” is prayer and I know each one reading this prays.   As a community we pray together on Sundays. The prayer chain prays. The Intentional Prayer Team of NHUMC has a special prayer focus each day. Most people say grace before meals.

 What is Prayer?

Let us begin a journey of prayer, to think about it, to look at different ways of prayer, and to JUST DO IT!
Each month’s newsletter will have a feature on prayer.
Prayer need not be complicated. It can be as simple as HELP PLEASE and THANKS. Pray any time or any where.
Talk to God as you would a friend.
God answers every prayer. Sometimes the answer is NO or WAIT or I HAVE A BETTER IDEA.
Take time every day to talk to God....or as the old hymn suggests “have a little talk with Jesus.....”

Peace,
Pastor Sheila
