THE SPIRITUAL PRACTICE OF PRAYER
A BOUNTIFUL BASKET OF BLESSINGS

This is a prayer practice suggestion you might enjoy during this month of counting blessings. You will need:
A small basket, jar or bowl
27-30 small pieces of plain paper
pen or pencil

Divide the pieces of paper into two piles.

From pile one, write on each small piece of paper the name of one person who has meant a great deal to you at sometime in your life. It could be a teacher, friend, pastor, neighbor, family member, etc. It might be someone in your life right now. It could be someone who lives with the saints. It might be someone from a long time ago. If you are a 2 person family, give each person half of one pile. (7 or 8 pieces of paper) If you are a bigger family, give each person a smaller pile of papers. This way, the entire family will join in YOUR thanksgiving each day.

From the other pile, write on each piece of paper one blessing in your life. Most people are thankful for food, home, health and family. See if you can find other blessings for each piece of paper. I am thankful to live in a free country. I am thankful for all those women a long time ago who made our wedding day memorable. I am thankful I can see the sunrises and sunsets. I am thankful for all the pets who were part of our lives. I am thankful................... Get the idea?

Mix the two piles together. Place in basket/bowl/jar. Each day at one meal (November 1-27) remove one scrap of paper. Hold it lovingly in your hands and your heart. Caress it. Take time to remember. If you are more than a 1-person family, talk about the person or the blessing. Give thanks.
An old hymn says “Count your blessings, name them one by one.....”
