Lent 2019 begins with Ash Wednesday, March 6th. Lent is 40 days and is as much about growing and becoming as it is about "giving up" a particular item. In the United Methodist Church Sun-days are considered "little Easters" so we do not have to spend the entire time with feelings of penitence or remorse. Sundays are to remember the hope of Easter, the promises of our baptism, and the possibilities that new life will bring. If you choose to give something up, that is of course your choice, yet remember that the point of giving something up is to change or renew us, and to lean upon Gods strength when we may be struggling with that choice. A more helpful approach to Lenten practices might be to be ADDING something to our lives—a time of devotion, prayer or meditation, to open ourselves to forgiveness or reconciliation—or if we want to stick with the idea of giving something up, consider the inner struggles we have with anger, resentment, or insecuri-ties.
