READING SCRIPTURE AS A
SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE (PRACTICE)
November 2010

In this month of Thanksgiving you are invited to read and mediate on any or all of the following scriptures or hymns. This is not a complete list! It has always been interesting to me that Paul, a man with a physical affliction, persecuted by authorities, a man in jail and often without funds, persistently begins his letters with thanksgivings and throughout his letters encourages his readers to give thanks. Indeed!! I Thessalonians 5:18 “give thanks in all circumstances.”

There are many Psalms of Thanksgiving.
I Corinthians 1:4
2 Corinthians 2:14
Philippians 4:4-6
Colossians 1:3-4
Philemon verses 4-5
Psalm 95:1-2
Psalm 100

Hymns of Thanksgiving may be found on Pages 84-101 of our Hymnal. Others are on pages 131, 169, 694.
A good discipline would be to choose one, read all the words once during the day.
Sing! Keep thanksgivings in your heart where ever you are.
Perhaps you and/or your family could write your own hymn or Psalm or letter of Thanksgiving.
Read and share it at your Thanksgiving meal.

Peace and Blessings, Sheila
