It’s Coat Time
Across the Northern plains most of us anticipate the end of September and first part of October will signal coat time...and if we haven’t checked our coat for buttons, spots and tears since spring it won’t be long before we will be doing a pre-winter inspection.
But here at North Highland UMC, coat time means something more, doesn’t it? I’m so excited to be a part of the energy of collecting, sorting, seeking storage space, and giving away literally hundreds of winter coats.
Granted these coats are a practical and necessary part of the region as the cold winds begin to blow, and yet they are also a metaphor for the love of God wrapped around each of us as the winds of life blow.
An excerpt from Bishop Schnase’s Fruitful Congregations series says: “Jesus tells that in every act of compassion, people touch Christ”. …I was a stranger and you welcomed me….I was naked and you gave me clothing. The disciples can’t imagine what he is talking about, until Jesus says, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me (Matthew 25:40). And Christ invites all his disciples to follow him into this kind of love.”
Loving and serving as Jesus taught will cost us something and will move us out of our comfort zones. So if you have a coat to share, please share it. If not, please consider purchasing one as a way to share the warmth of God’s embrace with a fellow traveler!
Peace and Blessings,
Pastor Lou
